Radiohead: Meeting People Is Easy 1998 Grant Gee

An entertaining "rockumentary" about Radiohead that shows some of the tedium of being a rock star, as well as some of the fun stuff.

An allusive, elegant meditation on natural beauty and anguished critique of corporate capitalism, Nouvelle Vague stars Alain Delon as a careworn drifter lured by an attractive businesswoman (Domiziana Giordano) into a fraught pas de deux complicated by sexual desire, class antagonism and gender difference.

This challenging and provocative documentary takes a look on all sides of the infamous F-word. Its taboo, obscene and controversial, yet somehow seems to permeate every single aspect of our culture-from Hollywood, to the schoolyard to the Senate floor in Washington D.C. It’s the word at the very center of the debate on Free Speech - and everyone seems to have an opinion. FUCK will exam how the word is impacting our world today thru interviews, film and television clips, music, and original animation by Oscar nominee Bill Plympton. Scholars and linguists will examine the long history of fuck. Comedians, actors, and writers who have charted and popularized the upward course of fuck will be heard from, often while defending the Constitutional Right of Free Speech, all the way to the Supreme Court. FUCK will visit with those who actually fuck for a living. We’ll hear from advocates who oppose fuck and it’s infringement into our everyday lives. We’ll watch some of the most famous and infamous film and television clips that feature fuck, we’ll hear some of the most famous fucks ever uttered and we’ll feel the impact of fuck on our everyday lives.

Last Hippie Standing (2002) - Marcus Robbin

“In the late sixties and early seventies all these young people in their twenties decided that they had to go to India. It was so magical, it was so mystical, it was so spiritual. So people from all over the world, from Europe, from South America, the United States and Japan all of a sudden decided that this was the place we had to be. And so we all just went.”
Swami William

“Last Hippie Standing“ is a video clip style ortrait about the hippie generation. Thirty years ago, this was a movement which came to Goa to find something they couldn’t find at home. Many returned, a few stayed. Goa, the hippie paradise of the 60’s is our point where we start to search for “the last hippies”. This former Portuguese colony in the south of India was for many the final destination after adventurous travels through Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Dreamlike untouched beaches promised to be a new holy land, which was also the spritual basis for Alex Garland’s novel ”The Beach“.
After viewing historical Super8 material we started searching for the famous beaches and found a new youth culture which seemed to be similar to the old hippie culture.
Raver, Part-Time-Hippies, Backpacker und “normal“ people enjoyed the beaches. We met people from Japan, Israel, Australia and the UK. Anjuna Beach is the center of the infamous Goa parties. Here, the millenium celebrations promised the best of all Goa parties. This is where the youth of the world demonstrated their understanding of fun. We spoke with locals about their understanding of the hippie movement and rave culture. DJ Whosane, Bombay’s most famous DJ, speaks about Goa trance and its relation to Hinduism. His views contradict those of the Chief Minister of Goa who emphasizes tourism and drug problems.
At a flea market, founded by the hippies in the 1970’s, we met three of those “drop outs” who still live in Goa. They told us their stories. These are three different view points, three different lives, which have met in Goa.

The Characters:

Cleo Odzer is a New Yorker who came as a hippie in the 1970’s to Goa. She left in the early 80’s because of massive drug problems. Cleo has a Ph.D. in Anthropology and has written the only book about Goa during the hippie era. For the millenium celebration she returned to Goa, the place she had missed for almost 20 years. She speaks openly about the problems at that time and how her longing has remained the same over the years.

Swami William, originally from San Francisco, has lived for years in a Himalayan mountain village. He spends the winter months in Goa. Among other subjects he has studied German and Philosophy in Heidelberg. In 1975 he came to India to make a film about Sadhus and in 1997 was himself initiated to be a Sadhu. He speaks about the influence of Hinduism on hippie culture at that time.

Goa Gil is Goa’s top DJ. Formerly a hippie from the famous Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, he came in the 70’s to Goa. Fascinated by its living culture he stayed. Already then his guitar sound was heard on the beaches, now he is a famous DJ all over the world. Goa Gil knows how to excite the masses with his psychedelic trance. At sunrise he talks about the spirit of his music and his evolution to a cyber-sadhu.

Finally, we followed Goa Gil and Swami William to Berlin, where they “taught” peace, love
and harmony at the Love Parade.

Cremaster 3 (the Order) (2002) - Matthew Barney

Cremaster 3 is the final installment of the five-part epic film cycle from director and sculpture artist Matthew Barney. Encompassing a dizzying number of themes, this elaborately stylized experimental film showcases Barney's affinity for architecture and sex. Much of the highly symbolic imagery involves Celtic mythology and phallic references, with Barney himself appearing as the Entered Apprentice and sculptor Richard Serra playing architect Hiram Abiff. Some of the settings include the Chrysler Building in New York City, the Saratoga race track, and the Guggenheim museum ( where much of Barney's work is actually shown). Spatially driven rather than narratively, the film is a display of visual effects and impulses with little to no dialogue. All five parts of the film cycle (titled out of sequence) can be seen at art galleries, though Barney has been known to give out video copies with the purchase of his sculptures. Cremaster 3 was shown in the Frontier program at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

Breaking Glass(1980) - Brian GIBSON

It's a tough decade, it's a harsh life. Only the hardest make it, or the hardest pushed. But sometimes it drives you over the edge - it's just the music industry... Set agianst a raw background of gang riots, anarchy and the seedy streets of strife-torn London, 'Breaking Glass' is a musical morality tale which captures the raucous energy of the punk era. "Do you want to spend your life waiting outside a lavatory?" With this immortal come-on line Danny (Phil Daniels), a would-be manager, fast-talks aggressive punk singer Kate (Hazel O'Connor), into letting him boost her career. Recruiting an oddball band, they play the sleazy North London pub circuit. The audiences respond to the ferocious Kate and her hard-edged songs. As she and Danny become lovers, they hit the big time with an extraordinary concert at London's Music Machine. But success has its down-side. Signed up by a record company giant, the band splits and Kate becomes swallowed up in the ruthless manipulation of its publicity machine. As she falls victim to the image of her own songs, pressure is piled upon pressure - and something has to crack... A raw slice from an extraordinary era, 'Breaking Glass'features an impressive supporting cast including Jonathan Pryce, Jon Finch and Richard Griffiths. But it is Hazel O'Connor who gives the performance of a lifetime, managing to capture the essence of the London punk scene of the late 70's.

Out of the Blue (1980) - Dennis Hopper

Don (Dennis Hopper) has just been released from prison and attempts to piece his life together while batteling the bottle and the repercussions of a tragedy, which still festers lika an open wound. His wife Kathy (Sharon Farrell) is scraping by as a waitress at a local diner, shooting smack and fooling around with the owner. Their daughter CeBe is a rebelious teenager experiencing the frustrations of living in a small town and the difficulties of adolescence. She is mourning the loss of Sid Vicious, but finds another kind of hero in her struggling dad. But when that last hero is destroyed she lashes out in one final and shocking act of revenge.

"You know dad knows more about punk than you do. 'Cause when Sid Vicious left, he took his loved ones with him."

One of my all-time favourite movies. A nihilistic piece of cinema from the backyards of America with a fantastic cast and an excellent performance by Dennis Hopper both in front and behind the camera. For some reason, this movie never really got a proper release back in the old days, but is today somewhat of a cult-item.

Oi! Warning (1999) - Ben Reding

The film (the third of the Reding brothers) is about a German teenager following his identity crisis. The boy, transformed by the usual down-trodden socio-economic conditions of contemporary Europe, becomes a skin head, following the first one's lead. On the other side he befriends with a leftist (a punk) who is gay. This causes more and more conflicts which eventually leads to an atrocious end for the punk. The film offers scenes of homophobic violence by skinheads, and the whole relationship between the skinhead and gay movements (in Germany gay skinheads represent a substantial subculture).

The CLASH Rude Boy (1980) - Jack Hazan,David Mingay

Cast/Avec The CLASH, Nicky HEADON, Johnny GREEN, Dave ARMSTRONG, Barry BAKER ...

For their first film, the Clash could've easily cast themselves in the lead. The fiery foursome, however, were nothing if not unpredictable. Just as the little known Phil Daniels was the star of Quadrophenia--rather than the Who--the completely unknown Ray Gange is the star of the more vérité-like Rude Boy. The year is 1978 and England has gone to the dogs, with the National Front on the rise and rioting in the streets. Ray, as he's also known in the film, is a bleary-eyed punk, who works in a hole-in-the-wall Brixton sex shop. The 20-year-old blows off steam by going to see the Clash. Sometimes he hangs out with them. Eventually, Ray becomes their roadie, but the band fails to convince him that the left-wing has any more to offer than the right. "I don't think you should mix your music with politics," he finally tells Joe Strummer. "It annoys me." In this re-mastered and expanded edition, the quartet performs "I Fought the Law," "White Riot" with Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey, and 15 other songs, both live and in rehearsal. As for Gange, he isn't a great actor, but he's an engaging presence, and Rude Boy plays like a rambling cross between Alan Clarke (Made in Britain) and early Mike Leigh (Meantime). It may be fiction, but feels like fact, and the abundance of early material from the Clash makes up for any shortcomings.

A Life Less Ordinary (1997) - Danny Boyle

The plot of the film starts in Heaven. God is unhappy with the rate of
people falling in love with each other, so Gabriel (played by Dan
Hedaya) summons pair of angels - O'Reilly (played by Holly Hunter)
and Jackson (played by Delroy Lindo) - and tells them they must
either create at least one romantic couple or be banished from
Heaven. Two people angels have in mind are Celine (played by
Cameron Diaz), spoiled daughter of rich businessman Naville
(played by Ian Holm) and Robert Lewis (played by Ewan McGregor),
janitor working in Naville's firm. After being losing girlfriend and
job, Robert flips out and kidnaps Celine. Naville hires two private
detectives to bring her back and those detectives are O'Reilly and
Jackson, using the pursuit as the opportunity to make Celine and
Robert falls in love with each other.

The team behind A LIFE LESS ORDINARY is the very same team
that produced TRAINSPOTTING, black Scottish comedy often seen
as one of the most important and influential 1990s films. This was
first Hollywood production for Boyle, his favourite writer John
Hodges, producer Andrew MacDonald and actor Ewan McGregor.

One Day in September (1999) - Kevin MacDonald

A compelling and Oscar-winning documentary on the 1972 Olympics hostage crisis involving 11 members of the Israeli team. Though MacDonald's method is often traditionally expository, he selects and arranges his evidence well, and gets interviews with some remarkable people, including one of the terrorists. Some have objected to the use of 1972 pop songs (Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, Apollo 100's Joy, and Deep Purple's Child in Time), but for me the music, efficiently played over montages of athletics and grisly post-mortems, actually makes the film. Even if history doesn't end up canonizing this film, any film on terrorism made before 2001 (especially so shortly before 2001) is bound to have a more complex perspective than a film made after (like Spielberg's Munich). Plus, the film's critique of the media culture of terrorism and news coverage of terrorist events seems prescient for having been made a decade ago.

Blowup (1966) - Michelangelo Antonioni

A photographer who is talented but aimless has photographed violence and pain without feeling any involvement. When he takes pictures of a couple in a park, he finds that he may have discovered a mystery, one that insists on involving him.

A London fashion photographer frolics with young models, then meets the mysterious Vanessa Redgrave. He takes a photo in a park. Back in his darkroom as he enlarges it, he sees a suggestion of something in the photo he never noticed while taking it. Has a crime occurred?

Has he truly photographed a murder in progress? Is he privy to more than he should be, and could this have some danger in store for him? Antonioni toys with the audience, never letting in on Redgrave's character, but letting us experience the world through Hemmings untrustworthy eyes and superficial values that momentarily seem to have been thrown out of whack due to this disquieting incident. The problem is, what Hemmings sees may or may not be true -- a classic shot where he tries to find Redgrave and he sees her in the middle of a walking crowd and she literally makes an about-face and disappears from view. Just like that. And his grasp of the mystery emanating from his brush with her at the park, like even Hemmings at the end, is gone, dissolved into the grass.

Antonioni makes great use of insinuation. He tantalizes us with the possibility of what could have been. In us he insights the same passion that is in Thomas. In the end, I don't think he disappears so much as he returns. He does not return as the same person, though. He is changed by the passion for his art and the challenge of reality. He is no longer playing the game of catch the murderer, or faking the motions of being a photographer, or posing as a deep artist by taking sad pictures. He is now truly inspired

'Blowup' is frequently mentioned as one of the most influential movies of the twentieth century. And I believe it is. But it is no dry and dull document that the viewer must force himself to "appreciate" while he stifles his yawns. Like 'Citizen Kane', 'Breathless' and 'Psycho' it is not only an important movie milestone, it is still a living and breathing work of art that will fascinate and impress any movie lover who approaches it with an open mind. 'Blowup' lures you in with its snapshot of swinging 60s London, and it's tease of being a murder mystery, which it really isn't, but by then you're hooked. This movie is a puzzle with no solution, a text with any interpretation the viewer cares to bring to it. That may sound heavy going and off putting, but this is a surprisingly watchable movie. Even the "boring" sequences are interesting! I think it gets better with every viewing.

Charlie Chaplin has a dual role in this film, his first with dialogue. Coraline (2009)

Coraline Jones is a girl of 11 who is feisty, curious, and adventurous beyond her years. She and her parents have just relocated from Michigan to Oregon. Missing her friends and finding her parents to be distracted by their work, Coraline tries to find some excitement in her new environment. She is befriended--or, as she sees it, is annoyed--by a local boy close to her age, Wybie Lovat and visits her older neighbors, eccentric British actresses Miss Spink and Forcible as well as the arguably even more eccentric Russian Mr. Bobinsky. After these encounters, Coraline seriously doubts that her new home can provide anything truly intriguing to her, but it does; she uncovers a secret door in the house. Walking through the door and then venturing through an eerie passageway, she discovers an alternate version of her life and existence. On the surface, this parallel reality is similar to her real life--only much better. The adults, including the solicitous Other Mother, seem much more welcoming to her. Coraline is more the center of attention there--even from the mysterious Cat. She begins to think that this Other World might be where she belongs. But when her wondrously off-kilter, fantastical visit turns dangerous and Other Mother schemes to keep her there, Coraline musters all of her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home--and save her family.

Vasya (2002) Andrei Zagdansky

This is an exceptional documentary on Vasya Sitnikov, Василий Яковлевич Ситников (1915-1987), an artist who was committed and declared insane, and thereafter was continually in and out of mental institutions. He left the world with many remarkable works of art, many surreal & erotic, many enigmatic, and no real explanations... Until now, mystery and controversy still surround this truly fascinating man.

Jinruigaku nyumon: Erogotshi yori (The Pornographers) (1966) - Shohei Imamura

Subu makes pornographic films. He sees nothing wrong with it. They are an aid to a repressed society, and he uses the money to support his landlady, Haru, and her family. From time to time, Haru shares her bed with Subu, though she believes her dead husband, reincarnated as a carp, disapproves. Director Shohei Imamura has always delighted in the kinky exploits of lowlifes, and in this 1966 classic, he finds subversive humor in the bizarre dynamics of Haru, her Oedipal son, and her daughter, the true object of her pornographer-boyfriend's obsession. Imamura's comic treatment of such taboos as voyeurism and incest sparked controversy when the film was released, but The Pornographers has outlasted its critics, and now seems ahead of its time.

Hysterical Californians prepare for a Japanese invasion in the days after Pearl Harbor.

"Spectacular" is certainly the word for this utterly wild comedy epic directed by Steven Spielberg and nominated for three Academy Awards. Lavish effects sequences highlight this hilarious, all-star extravaganza set in Los Angeles just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when fear of a Japanese invasion threw the city into a state of Pandemonium. Screwball characters run wild on Hollywood Boulevard as maniac servicemen, zealous store owners, teary-eyed girls and bickering Nazis are thrown together in this fast-rising comic soufle that even features a parody of Spielberg's own Jaws opening.

Le fantôme de la liberté (The Phantom of Liberty) (1974) - Luis Bunuel

One of Luis Bunuel's most free-form and purely Surrealist films, consisting of a series of only vaguely related episodes - most famously, the dinner party scene where people sit on lavatories round a dinner table on, occasionally retiring to a little room to eat.

Dreams (1990) - Akira Kurosawa

This is essentially eight separate short films, though with some overlaps in terms of characters and thematic material - chiefly that of man's relationship with his environment. 'Sunshine Through The Rain': a young boy is told not to go out on the day when both weather conditions occur, because that's when the foxes hold their wedding procession, which could have fatal consequences for those who witness it. 'The Peach Orchard': the same young boy encounters the spirits of the peach trees that have been cut down by heartless humans. 'The Blizzard': a team of mountaineers are saved from a blizzard by spiritual intervention. 'The Tunnel': a man encounters the ghosts of an army platoon, whose deaths he was responsible for. 'Crows': an art student encounters 'Vincent Van Gogh' and enters the world of his paintings. 'Mount Fuji in Red': nuclear meltdown threatens the devastation of Japan. 'The Weeping Demon': a portrait of a post-nuclear world populated by human mutations. 'Village of the Watermills': a sunny portrait of a village whose population is entirely at one with nature.

Yoidore tenshi (Drunken angel) (1948) - Akira Kurosawa

Considering this is the first collaboration between one of the 'heavyweight' director/star combos in cinema (tops in the Japanese film world, probably their equal to America's Scorsese/De Niro), this is quite a powerhouse of drama. That's not to say it's a completely dour film- some of Akira Kurosawa's trademark ironic (and subtle) humor is laced into scenes. But more-over, Kurosawa made here an important film for its time. While the team of Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune would become even more internationally known for the thrilling Japanese mystery Stray Dog, and the masterpiece Rashomon, this film seems to get a little under-looked by Kurosawa fans (at least those that haven't quite dug into the catalog of their work). Is it their very best? Not quite, but it ranks high up there for me.
And it's not just the collaboration of the director and the star- there is also the co-star, Takashi Shimura, who has made his great mark on many of Kurosawa's films (the two I mentioned previous, plus his best role in Ikiru, and Seven Samurai as well). He plays a doctor who can't quite lay off the booze, even as he tries to help the people around him who seem to be contracting all sorts of bad diseases from the contaminated water (most notably tuberculosis). Mifune plays a member of the Yakuza crime gang, but is more of just a low level thug than a real 'somebody'. He's getting signs of TB, and goes to the 'good' doctor, who refuses help to the Yakuza, having outright contempt for them. Through the course of the film, The two actors portray these people as fragile, intense, hostile, compassionate, and with all the great emotional impact that comes in Japanese dramas.
While one might want to check this out for the context of the Yakuza part of the plot (which was one reason I wanted to check it out- not the Yakuza in today's Japanese cinema of course), the side that Kurosawa shows wonderfully in a film like Red Beard is also brought to light here. There's some action, but it gets thrown into a larger, more emotional context as Mifune's character starts to deteriorate. It becomes very theatrical in a sense, but there is also the realism that Kurosawa had on his sleeve, one that he had to express in post-war Japan (many of these post-war images are better expressed in Stray Dog, but he gives some ample time here too in a subtler, more dangerous context). So this mix comes together, and it turns into one hell of a picture. It may feel a little on the weak side compared to some of Kurosawa's magnum opuses (Seven Samurai, Ran, Yojimbo come to mind). Yet it ranks as an important point in the careers of the actors and director, and it contains enough great moments, enough in terms of the position of the camera and the often shattering music, to make it an under-rated (perhaps minor) classic. Personally, I loved it- especially the last twenty minutes.

Immortal (2004) Enki Bilal

This movie combines dreamlike landscapes, fascinating characters, a haunting soundtrack, and commanding performances by its three main human actors into a delight for the senses. I will go along with those who say the plot is a bit weak and spotty in places, but the film is still a masterpiece. I had never even heard of Nikopol, or didn't remember it anyway. I knew Enki Bilal was familiar, but had to go look it up to see where I knew the name. Turns out I had seen his stuff in Heavy Metal magazine back when it came out in the late 70s. Since I loved the art and stories of that mag, it didn't surprise me that I was drawn to this movie after stumbling upon it accidentally on sat TV. It has a bleak yet sublime futuristic look and feel to it that makes "Blade Runner" seem hum-drum. Linda Hardy is disturbed and disturbing, enigmatic and beautiful, and very, very sexy. Kretschmann is irreverent, witty, and funny. The graphics characters also have their own personalities and fit in wonderfully, I think. I agree with others who have remarked that the point here is art, not slavish duplication of reality. Both the "real" and the Eugenics-created Dayaks are masterfully done and equally creepy. Really a pleasure to watch.
